Cashing in on superstitions

Western Digital is offering a new hard drive created mainly for the Chinese market. By naming the drive 808.8G SATA2 32M (WD8088AADS), WD is trying to make it a bit more appealing to Chinese consumers, as the number 8 is regarded as a lucky number in China.

In Europe, the number 8 is mostly associated with that black billiard ball thingie, which if struck forces you to buy a round of drinks for your mates. WD's official slogan for the new drive is “All the Way Lucky with 8.″

Under the hood you'll find an ordinary Caviar Green Series drive with 500GB platters, and it spins between 5400-7200RPM. As the 500GB tech is rather low, WD is apparently disabling parts of the platters and the drive ends up with 808GB instead of 1000GB. This shouldn't worry you, as it still comes with a 3-year warranty and for $79 it sounds like a fair deal.

So far the new drive is only avaialable in China, and it's not listed on WD. Apparetly you'll also get an Audi TT toy car in the bundle. Odlly, it's the old Audi TT mk.1.
