Swine-flu to spoil Computex attendance

Sharp drop

After unfortunate reports of swine flu in Taiwan, it is expected that Computex 2009 attendance will be lower than originally expected.

Some visitors from Mexico have already cancelled and US and Japan are expected to follow in what is said to be a “sharp drop”. They’re reportedly not the only ones, as some other overseas exhibitors have recently canceled as well.

Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TETDC) has informed the public that it has taken measures to protect visitors from the disease, but didn’t offer an estimate number of visitors.

Nevertheless, this isn’t a concern for many IT players, as it isn’t expected to have any impact on orders, mostly due to the fact that most orders have already been processed. This looks like the time when Computex had to be canceled due to a Bird flue a few years back, and even when they organized it again a few month later, people were concerned about the flue.
