The news from March that NVISION is
to be cancelled this year due to the depression was very depressing indeed,
and has left many avid enthusiasts shaking their heads in wonder at the company’s
makeup plans scheduled for this fall. Naturally, the replacement event is going
to be geared more towards IT industry leaders, engineers, venture capitalists,
journalists, and all those other fancy collared-shirt characters who
superimpose the backend of serious GPU business.
Nvidia’s new event scheduled for this fall, for lack of a
better name, will be known as GPU Technology Conference 2009. It is scheduled
to take place from Wednesday, September 30th to Friday, October 2nd in the
Silicon Valley capital of San Jose, California. More specifically, GTC will be
three summit groups held simultaneously – Emerging Companies Summit, GPU
Developer Summit, and the Nvidia Research Summit.
The decision for a narrowed focus on just three main groups
rather than the broad spectrum of simultaneously hosted events at NVISION might be a breath of relief for a dozen or so journalists out there.
According to Nvidia, attendees will be able to “learn about the seismic shifts happening
in computing, preview disruptive technologies to stay ahead of imminent trends,
get instant access to tools and techniques to impact mission critical projects,
and network with experts and peers from across a broad range of fields.”
Based on the context, it can be assumed that there won’t be
any hardcore LAN tournaments or mind-jolting Guiness World Record attempts with
unlimited BAWLS energy drinks this year. These sweaty action packed events will
be replaced with more classical, modest presentations by over 60 companies,
industry panels, and some nice fireside chats with Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, that is unless
AMD is in the room.
Registration for Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference 2009 begins
on Wednesday, June 17th and the full event information details can be found here.
