iSuppli beancounters claim Moore's law will come to an end by 2014,
provided the world doesn't come to an end a couple of years earlier.
Researchers believe it will become increasingly difficult for
chipmakers to transition to new production processes, due to high costs
and technology constraints. At nodes under 18nm, iSuppli believes the
industry will hit a point where production tools become too costly to
depreciate with volume production. In other words, they can't pay for
themselves over their lifetime.
This basically means we are likely to see nodes over 18nm or 22nm stick
around for years to come, and manufacturers will have to come up with
ever more innovative concepts and designs to squeeze out more
performance from less transistors.
