Now claiming they would lose money

Sony is now pushing back on the suggestion that they will slash the price of the console when the slim PlayStation 3 is released. Sony is now claiming that they would lose money on every PlayStation 3 that is sold if they drop their price to $299.

What is more surprising is that the company now claims that they could have come out with a console at a $299 price point if that would have been their strategy from the start. Sony CEO Howard Stringer claims that while developers and publishers are putting pressure on the company to drop the price of the console to help grow the user base, but this pressure will not influence their decision on when or if they will drop the price of the console.

The company continues to talk about their long-term strategy and that patience is necessary, as this the company believes that time is necessary for their ten-year plan to take root. Sony also believes that too much of an emphasis has been placed on the price of the console as the deciding factor on which console consumers purchase.

While the company is claiming that their strategy is on track for the long haul, we think that much of this could be nothing more than a smoke screen. Our sources continue to insist that despite what Sony might be saying publicly, the price drop will come and the reason that the company is on the offensive today is nothing more than an effort to prevent the loss of momentum to help clear inventory. We guess that only time will tell, but we find it hard to believe that Sony would want to loose another holiday season to Microsoft or Nintendo.
