Now that Toshiba will be going Blu

As we explained in our earlier story that Toshiba would be joining the Blu-ray fray with the launch of a new Toshiba branded Blu-ray player before the holidays, it now comes as no surprise that several of our sources have contacted us to let us know that Microsoft is taking another look at Blu-ray again, and might really have no choice but to follow Toshiba’s lead and release an external Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360.

The talk of an external Blu-ray drive is likely heating up because Sony is again trying to use this as a competitive advantage over the Xbox 360. Now that most have forgotten about the HD DVD vs. Blu-ray war that raged on for a couple of years, Microsoft might have no real choice other than to negate the (perhaps) perceived advantage of having a Blu-ray player on your console.

While Microsoft has previously downplayed the importance of offering Blu-ray support, the cost of the actual drive has dropped to more affordable levels; and because of their past work with Toshiba, it is possible that Microsoft might re-open the possibility of Blu-ray content again. After all, sales of Blu-ray titles are picking up and Microsoft does not want to be left without being able to offer Blu-ray support.
