Remains committed to the Spore IP, despite cuts

While we don’t have the exact numbers yet, our moles tell of layoffs that have hit Electronic Arts-owned Maxis studios today. Electronic Arts now seems to be confirming this news as of the writing of this story, but has declined to go into any specifics.

Maxis was the studio that was previously headed by Will Wright and the studio responsible for Spore. From what our sources tell us, several dozen employees received their walking papers and are affected by what is being called a “workforce reduction” due to business conditions, according to a mole that we spoke with.

EA claims that they are still committed to the Spore IP and other Maxis-developed IP, as well. From what we are hearing, titles that are scheduled for launch in the next three months are still on schedule for release.

EA seems to be a bit sensitive about this move and is not open to saying much about it. What we do hear is that employees that are getting the axe will be getting some severance and outplacement assistance.
