Pulling out of China seems to be all the rage nowadays and the
world's biggest domain name registration company, Go Daddy, is also
planning to get the hell out of dodge.
Chinese authorities required the company to change its registration
rules in line with Chinese laws, but Go Daddy said no. The Chinese
government asked Go Daddy to provide extensive personal data on each
applicant, including photographs. The company said the new rules would
put individuals who register domains at risk and that it would have no
part in it.
''We
were immediately concerned about the motives behind the increased level
of registrant verification being required,'' said Go Daddy General Counsel Christine Jones. ''The intent of the procedures
appeared, to us, to be based on a desire by the Chinese authorities to
exercise increased control over the subject matter of domain name
registrations by Chinese nationals.''
Jones noted that China was asking for additional information
retroactively and that Go Daddy's decision had nothing to do with
Google's pull out.
