It is major motivation for suicide, company claims

After
the entire saga that saw Foxconn’s factories becoming a place where underpaid workers working in dubious conditions started jumping to their deaths, the company announced how it will no longer compensate the families of the deceased. Strangely enough, the reasoning behind this is that it’s the compensation money that plays a major role in people taking their lives.

Foxconn’s CEO, Terry Gou, said how the compensation money, which amounts to ten years of regular salaries, is a major motivation and he backed it up with a message one person left for his parents. The message, among other things, reads: “…now I'm going to jump off Foxconn, really leaving now, but you don't have to be sad, because Foxconn will pay a bit of money, this is all your son can repay you now.”

After continuing to blame pretty much anyone who’s not Foxconn for the situation at hand, Gou also announced the plans to relocate some of the company’s work to either Taiwan or Vietnam. The increased wages and the resulting earnings forecast also pushed Foxconn to look at setting up a fully automated facility in Taiwan or Vietnam, as well as relocating more manufacturing work to the existing Vietnamese plant.

You might remember that the Foxconn situation has even reached the all-hearing ears of Steve Jobs, who said his company takes the supply chain seriously and will look into it. We’re not sure whether this is the result of his “looking into it”, but if it is, we’d very much like to advise him to look into the reasoning behind making iPads.
