It gets worse

A new set of laws which double the penalties for illegal filesharing and bring about a new crime of "attempted infringement"have been introduced into Congress.

The new law means that you can be charged with criminal copyright infringement even if such infringement has not actually taken place.

The law, HR 3155, the Intellectual Property Enhanced Criminal Enforcement Act of 2007, has been introduced in Congress by Republican Steve Chabot.

The law will apply to anyone who pirates something with a retail value of $1,000 "for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain."
