$100 million and 500 jobs

Sony plans to invest $97 million in a new battery plant in Singapore.

The new factory should produce 96 million batteries per year and employ around 500 workers. It's expected to begin operations in a year.

The demand for lithium-ion polymer batteries is constantly growing, as more and more feature packed multimedia phones hit the market. Ericsson was the first cell phone makers to embrace lithium-ion polymer batteries on its high end models prior to its marriage to Sony six years ago.

This is good news for Singapore, this is Sony's first major investment in Southeast Asia and if all goes well it probably won't be the last.
