By the end of September

Nvidia has just announced that it plans to lay off of 360 people, or 6.5 percent its workforce. This unpleasant event is taking place as Nvidia has dramatically changed the business outlook after Q2. We had a chance to speak with Nvidia and Luciano Alibrandi, a Director of product PR in EMEAI, has confirmed the news.

The pink slip strategy will affect all departments and it will be global, not region specific, and we believe that people who will get fired will get the announcement as soon as this week.

The layoffs have to finish by the end of Q3 2008, or should we say September 2008.

Nvidia’s representatives have told Fudzilla that Nvidia remains focused on its two newborn projects, CUDA a parallel computing technology, and Tegra computer on a chip. Nvidia believes that investing in these areas is going to help the company to get right back on the growth track.

Naturally, this layoff strategy is directly connected with the strong ATI lineup, notebook issue and war against Intel; but remember, AMD has cut 10 percent of its stuff this year, and Intel laid off many managers two years ago.

This is what Jensen said about this:

“Our action today is difficult, but necessary considering current business realities.  Despite our reduction, we will continue to invest in selective high-growth opportunities like our revolutionary CUDA parallel computing technology and our Tegra mobile single-chip computer,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, President and CEO of NVIDIA.  “We are taking fast action to enhance our competitive position and restore our financial performance.  All of us at NVIDIA are determined to emerge from these challenges an even stronger company.”

With Lehman Brothers down, Stanley Morgan at the edge, and Wall Street on its knees, we believe that this is not the only announcement of this kind we will see in the IT sector in the months and quarters to come.
