Next gen PSP graphics

These day's many don't know who Imagination Technologies are, as the company pulled out of the spot light a good few years ago now, but the company makes some of the best graphics cores for low power portable devices.

Among its many achievements, Imagination Technologies has gotten one of its graphics cores into the iPhone, but it seems like the company is aiming even higher, if the rumours are indeed true. According to EETimes, Imagination Technologies have struck a deal with Sony for the next gen PSP graphics core.

If this proves to be true, then this is huge news for Imagination Technologies although one problem is the fact that the graphics core mentioned, the PowerVR SGX55x, isn't even finished yet. Imagination Technologies are not mentioning any details what so ever in the press release, which makes this rumours seem even more likely.

Still, it's just a rumour, with with Intel using a PowerVR core in the Poulsbo Atom chipset, stranger things than the next gen PSP using a PowerVR core could happen. Considering how strong Imagination Technologies have been when it comes to providing graphics cores for a wide range of ARM solutions and taken into account the cost of developing a graphics core, it seems like a sensible move by Sony to team up with a strong player in the low power mobile graphics space.
