AMD says farewell to its handheld business

Qualcomm Incorporated and AMD have announced an agreement in which Qualcomm has bought a number of graphics and multimedia technology assets, intellectual property and resources of handheld business from AMD.

The deal worth US $65 million, and gives Qualcomm certain multimedia technologies, including graphics cores, which Qualcomm has already been licensing for several years. Qualcomm has extended offers of employment to various design and development teams from AMD's handheld business and AMD's Rober J. Rivet, chief operations and administrative officer. We are sure that the talented AMD handheld employees will be a valuable asset to Qualcomm.

If Qualcomm plays its cards right, the ex-AMD handheld business, also known as the Imageon technology, might have a bright future, but they do need to find someone better than Motorola to rely on.
