Cheaper to make

The guys from Expreview.com managed to score some pictures of Nvidia's upcoming "third-generation" of the GTX 260 card that will use P897 PCB in combination with D10U-20 55nm GPU. The new P897 PCB should bring lower production cost of up to $10 to $15 which will make the GTX 260 a bit more competitive, or just bring more money to Nvidia and its partners.

According to the info, the card in question will hit mass production as of next week, and as you will be able to see from those pictures, some things were changed. Inno3D's card will use its own non-reference cooler, and as far as it could be seen from the back of the card it will use something similar to its Freezer DHT line.

The card uses a 6-phase power design, and as noted previously it has no metal support around the GPU. Some of the other design changes on the new P897 PCB also include an 8-layer PCB, cheaper DVI connectors and rumored 512K BIOS ROM as opposed to 10-layer PCB and 1M BIOS used on current GTX 260s.

This might mean that we are soon looking at a price cut for GTX 260 from Nvidia, but that's left to be seen. The new cards might not be as happy on the overclock as the previous generation which shouldn't be a big problem as long as the price is lower.
