Lower clocks and no power connector

Zotac has launched its new 9800GT Eco edition card that has lower clocks but doesn't need additional power as the 75 Watts from the PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slot is just enough. The original plan was to rename this card to GTS 240 but as you know partners managed to convince Nvidia that renaming had to stop with the GTS 250.

The new 9800GT Eco works at 550MHz for the core, which is 50MHz lower than the reference 9800GT card. It still has 112 stream processors but the shader clock has been dropped from 1,500 on the reference card to 1,375MHz for the Eco Edition. The card has 512MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 1,800MHz and a 256-bit memory interface.

Zotac also decided to change the cooler on this card, as it comes with a rather small fan inserted in a single slot heatsink that covers almost the entire card, except for the VRM part. The cooler looks a lot like the reference one, just without the plastic cover.

Unfortunately, the price or the availability date are still unknown, but if you want a 9800GT that doesn't need additional power, Zotac's 9800GT should hit retail/e-tail pretty soon.
