Globalfoundries might work with Nvidia

If it doesn't affect AMD, why not?

As Globalfoundries became quite a news issue lately, we’re hearing rumors of possible cooperation with Nvidia, AMD’s fierce competitor. The Inquirer interviewed the company’s head of communications Jon Carvill, and although he didn’t confirm this, he gave enough of a diluted answer to suggest this very well might happen.

Globalfoundries apparently plans aggressive growth and investments in 32nm and 28nm productions and intends to target “top 20 fabless semiconductor manufacturers”. The company hopes that their “most advanced process technology” and the Automated Precision Manufacturing (APM) will be enough to bring them to their doorstep. Note that APM is a process where information is constantly fed back on how the chips yield, so that the corrections can be made in initial, medial or final stages of the process.

As for Nvidia, Mr. Carvill said that Globalfoundries would be open for “discussions” with Nvidia and anyone else as long as it didn’t compromise their relationship with AMD and customer service to them. Additionally, ever since that nasty chip packaging feud between Nvidia and TSMC came to be, rumors persist that not everything is going smooth in between the companies, which if true, would be another potential reason why this might come to be.
