Forget about Windows XP

We've gotten a few more details as to why Intel's GN40 is having problems with HD content in Windows XP.

DXVA 2.0 is only supported by Windows Vista and Windows 7 and the EVR (Enhanced Video Renderer) is the part that is critical when it comes the media playback on these types of machines, as it's the part that offloads the CPU and enables the GPU to take over most of the workload when it comes to playing back video content.

This also means that you're limited to the video player you can use as unless the software supports DXVA 2.0 no offloading to the GPU will take place. All of this is not really an issue on your average PC, at least as long as you're happy running Windows Vista or Windows 7 Beta on it, but on a netbook or nettop, it's a big problem, as these platforms are mostly shipping with Windows XP.

This is also part of the reason why the Asus Eee PC 1004DN had major problems playing back HD video content, as Asus has in their wisdom decided to ship the system with Windows XP rather than Vista to keep costs down. This is a very poor decision on Asus' side, as it will make the Eee PC 1004DN look like a poor choice of hardware.
