Expect dual core + ION

ION is
becoming very popular and important for Nvidia, and CEO Jensen is very happy with the adoption of this chip. He believes that ION brings much more functionality to the nettop / netbook platform and that there is simply enough space for both Intel’s and Nvidia’s Atom-based platforms.

Intel’s platform lacks a great co-processor, while Nvidia’s platform powered by the ION chipset can get decent graphics and speed up data parallel applications, and bring the whole platform to the next level. Let’s not forget HD support that comes only with ION.

Intel still disagrees with Nvidia and claims you don’t need better graphics in Atom platforms, but the market has proven that they want to buy nettops and netbooks with better graphics. Intel is trying to send a message that Atom is only about low power computing and that you don’t need fancy stuff like ION chipset and HD support. Once again, the market tends to disagree, at least one portion of it.

Jensen promises more ION-based platforms, and Nvidia expects to increase the ION netbook/nettop market share following the introduction of Windows 7, especially due to superior graphics and increased data parallel processing power.

He also said that there will be some dual-core portable computers with ION that will show up before this Xmas.
