Roundup: A good card at the wrong price

AMD has finally filled the gap between the HD 5770 and the HD 5850 cards, with the new HD 5830. Following the same naming scheme as on the HD 4000 series, the new HD 5830 is similar to the HD 5850 and can be considered as a cut down version of the same.

Unlike previous HD 5800 series cards, this time, AMD has given its AIB partners the green light for non-reference versions as AMD is only shipping GPUs and it is up to partners to design their own PCB and use their own cooling system.

The HD 5830 card has 1120 stream processors, 56 texture units and 16 ROPs and works at 800MHz for the GPU and 1000MHz for 1GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 256-bit memory interface. Although you would expect it to be on par with HD 4890 card, the HD 4890 is about 10 percent faster in most cases, but the good side is that the HD 5830 does beat the GTX 275 in some tests and does bring the DirectX 11 support, Eyefinity and we shouldn't forget that it is made in the 40nm process, unlike the GTX 275 which is stuck at 55nm and supports DirectX 10.

We left the price for the end as this is something that has kinda ruined the entire launch. The suggested price tag stands at US $239, which is around US $20 or even $40 more than it should be priced. The justifications for this price tag is when you compare it to the HD 5850, which retails at around US $300, as it gives around 80 percent of performance for 80 percent of the price. There is also a simple fact that AMD is still without competition as Nvidia is "a bit" late with its Fermi architecture.

A bunch of reviews have already gone up and ours will be up pretty soon. In any case, if you have been waiting for the HD 5830, you might want to wait a bit more for its price to go down.
