Barts goes down to US $150
AMD has finally lifted the NDA veil of its newest mid-range card, the Radeon HD 6790. Giving Nvidia no room to breath and only a few weeks since the launch of the GTX 550 Ti, AMD came up with a new mid-range card based on the, quite well known, Barts GPU.

The new Radeon HD 6790 card packs 800 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Units, 16 ROPs and features 1GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 256-bit memory interface. The reference card ends up clocked at 840MHz for the GPU and 4200MHz for memory. Since we are talking about a mid-range card here, AMD gave a green light to its partners so most, if not all, cards will end up with a custom design. This is a really good thing as the reference blower fan cooler is far from being silent or efficient and some custom cooling solutions on the market are pretty good.

The TDP ended up at a way below the rated 150W so cards with a single PCI-Express 6-pin power connector are possible, despite the fact that the reference design comes with two of those.

Most reviewers agree on the same thing that this one is pretty good and that AMD released this card with a sole purpose, to compete with Nvidia GTX 550 Ti. The Radeon HD 6790 does it job well but yet again the card should have been a 10 to 20 bucks cheaper, which might happen as soon as partners manage to push a decent volume of those card to the market.
