Nvidia Maxwell coming in Q1 is GM107

Mainstream part

Nvidia is starting its transition to the next generation, a very power aware chip called Maxwell and the first part we are aware is a small entry level chip called the GM107. GM stands for Geforce Maxwell and will be first of many chips makes on this architecture.

The same chip is going after mobile designs as Maxwell is designed to be power efficient but it will play games just fine. With GM107 there might be more mobile design wins as well, as the chip has great thermals. On the desktop side the GM107 replaces the GK208, a Kepler based entry level part, and OEM 640 and 630 cards, but we expect that a 650 or faster replacement is on the way to follow in the months to come.

Naturally there will be higher end part but Nvidia is starting it from the bottom down, as transitioning to a new architecture always has its own challenges.

2014 looks like a good year for desktop gaming as the market got some confidence back in AMD after its successful Hawaii launch. The competition is heating up like in the good old days. People finally realized that the best gaming experience is going to remain on desktops and that despite some cool notebooks with GPUs inside, the best resolution, performance and eye candy will remain on desktops.

Maxwell is a good start to an interesting year for Nvidia and we are sure that AMD is working hard to bring its own next generation chips to the market.
