Godfrey Cheng claims

AMD's Director of Product Marketing, Platform Marketing at AMD, Godfrey Cheng, spent some time with us and shared some of his thoughts for the future of high-end gaming. This is the guy who is responsible for Crossfire and he sees a huge potential with this marchitecture.

It was funny to see that even Intel is excited about it, as two out of three PCs that Intel showed at CES had Crossfire inside. Godfrey added that Intel's platform group and AMD’s Crossfire group work very closely, and that this cooperation goes much better than many would expect. It was hilarious to hear the same story from the Intel guys and AMD's Crossfire group just few hours apart.

The Crossfire group is currently busy with finishing up a new CrossfireX driver and this new guy will enable triple and quad Crossfire with three or four Radeon 3800-series cards. At least in 3Dmark06 it scales just right and gives you some great scores.

They even have a Beta driver that can connect two R680 cards together, getting quad Crossfire with two cards. AMD first showcased Quad Crossfire on Spider platform last year and AMD always underlines that its platform offers a great gaming experience.

Godfrey also added that he sees that in the future Crossfire will play an important role in high-end gaming. If you want to get the best performance, Crossfire is and will be the best way to achieve it. If you want to play on a 30-inch screen, once again Crossfire is the way to go.

Crossfire currently doesn’t care if you have an AMD or Intel CPU and motherboard, as it scales well on both platforms, and this is also the plan for the future. Even Intel is trying to spread this message around.

The future of high-end is Crossfire and with CrossfireX driver it will simply becomes even more important. The CrossfireX driver is still scheduled for a Q1 release, but it won’t be in January as we previously expected.
