At least in 3DMark Vantage

According to the article over at VR-Zone, ATI's R700 prototype card beats the Nvidia Geforce GTX 280. The R700, commonly but not officially, known as the Radeon HD 4870 X2, will be made up of two RV770 GPUs strapped onto a single PCB, the same concept as the HD 3870 X2.

Other info from this article states that DAAMIT is going to let its AIB partners decide the clock speeds, PCB design and everything else for themselves, so we might be looking forward to HD 4850 X2 cards, as well. According to their info, R700 prototype scores about X5500 in 3DMark Vantage Extreme preset, while the Nvidia-alleged "king of the hill," known as the GTX 280, scores about X4800.

It is still early to draw any conclusions since both teams are still polishing their drivers, but if this info is correct, ATI might  have a card that will snatch the performance throne from the green team.
