Could be bigger than the iPhone has become

According to various sources, Apple is preparing a new addition to the iPhone family to be known as the iPhone Nano. The iPhone Nano is expected to be available in time for this holiday season.

While we don’t yet know most of the specifics of the iPhone Nano, what we do know is that it will be a slimmed down, smaller, low-cost version of the standard iPhone, according to sources.

The target market space for this phone will be those customers that want some of the iPhone’s features as well as the look and feel of the iPhone at a more affordable price point. We also expect that it will be offered to “pay-as-you-go” customers, as well. The iPhone Nano would, of course, have less memory (estimated to only be 4GB) as well as a smaller display.

While these rumors have circulated before, it does seem that we have a bit more credibility as to the sources behind these rumors this time around. Some sources cite examination of Apple’s iPhone patent applications as being the primary source for the speculation.

In other iPhone news, sales of the new 3G iPhone have been brisk. While cracked plastics on the rear housing have made some buyers unhappy, it seems that, at least for the moment, demand is outpacing supply. To this end, Apple is said to be cranking up production to 800,000 units per week.

Apple has also released version 2.0.1 of the iPhone firmware. The 2.0.1 firmware was let out the door very late yesterday and features a few bug fixes, including performance improvements to the backup process, SMS typing speed improvements, and Netshare still appears to work.

One other iPhone item of news of note in the U.S. is that AT&T has been able to extend their exclusive contract as the sole carrier with the iPhone in the U.S. The extension grants AT&T this exclusivity until 2010.

The original contract that Apple had with AT&T gave Apple the right to offer the iPhone to other carriers in the U.S. starting in 2009 if Apple were to exercise this option. Now that the extension has been agreed to, AT&T will continue to be the exclusive home of the iPhone in the U.S.
