The Agora and Agora Pro

It's taken a while and the pricing isn't as good as initially announced, but Australia has gotten its first Android powered handsets; yes, Kogan Technologies launched not one, but two different models at once, and they're henceforth known as the Agora and Agora Pro.

The base specifications for both models include a 2.5-inch touch screen display with 320x240 resolution, a full front facing QWERTY keyboard, a 624MHz CPU, 256MB of ROM and 128MB of RAM. Other features include Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, FM radio and a microSD card slot. The Pro model also has a 2Megapixel camera, 802.11b/g WiFi and GPS navigation via Google Maps.

Both models support 3.5G HSDPA connectivity and will work on 850, 1,900 and 2,100MHz bands, while quad-band GSM with GPRS and EDGE is also supported. Size-wise you're looking at 108x64x14.8mm (HxWxD) which is a little bit chunky, but not overly so for a device with a front facing keyboard. At 130g the weight is about on par with similar devices, as well.

Price-wise, things have changed a fair bit, as Kogan announced that the handset was going to be on sale for a mere AU$199, but due to the Australian Dollar dropping heavily and the general economic downturn, the Agora starts at AU$299 (€152/$192) with the Agora Pro going for AU$399 (€203/US$257) and the good news is that international delivery to anywhere in the world is a mere AU$59.85 (€30/$38), so it's not going to be expensive to import.

The only downside is that you won't get the Agora in time for Christmas, as shipping only starts on January 29th 2009, so there's still a month and a half to wait before these new Android handsets ship.
