Unusual Windows Mobile device

The possible future partner of Sony Ericsson, Mobinnova, has just launched its first handset under its own brand and the Mobinnova ICE is a rather interesting and unusual Windows Mobile 6.1 professional handset.

Not only does it feature a main 3in WQVGA display (400x240 resolution), but it also has a secondary 1.1in OLED display with a 128x96 resolution which offers adaptive controls depending on what application you're running. This is the first time we've seen this on a Windows Mobile device and it looks like Mobinnova wants to try to compete with the best devices from Samsung and LG with the ICE.

Luckily this isn't the only selling features of the ICE, as it also has a 528MHz Qualcomm processor, 128MB of RAM and 256MB of ROM, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, GPS with aGPS, a 3Megapixel camera with auto focus, a front facing camera for video calls, an FM radio with RDS, an accelerometer, a light sensor, TV-out, a microSD card slot and USB 2.0 pc connectivity.

The ICE will also give you 7.2Mbit HSDPA and 2Mbit HSUPA if your network provider offers these speeds and it will work on 900, 1900 and 2100MHz 3G networks and it also has quad band GSM with EDGE connectivity. The battery is rated at up to 6h talk time and 160h standby and the handset comes with a leather carrying case and a headset that connects via the USB connector.

Mobinnova has also made its own custom UI for the ICE which looks quite slick on the pictures, but it's hard to tell how well it works in reality, but it looks similar to what HTC is offering. The ICE measures 114x53.5x13mm (HxWxD) and weighs in at 130g.

It's available now in Spain from a wide range of resellers for the very reasonable price of €349 including VAT. It looks like there's a new Windows Mobile player that is very serious to steal some market share away from the more established players, although a bit wider availability is needed first, but with devices like this, we think Mobinnova has a lot of potential.
