Onyx, Driftwood, and Magnum are latest codenames

Our moles have let us know that three additional BlackBerry units have now been given actual codenames by RIM and have entered more defined development. This normally means that prototypes of the device or feature sets have been seen by carriers and the carriers have said that they are interested in such a device.

The first is codename Onyx, which is a GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS BlackBerry that offers GPS, Camera, Wi-Fi (no UMA support), QWERTYT keyboard, and a 480x360 resolution screen. From our understanding AT&T has already committed to this one, but we know little else about it beyond this at the moment.

The second is codename Driftwood, which is a GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS BlackBerry unit that will offer GPS, camera, Wi-Fi with UMA, and a QWERTY keyboard. It is thought that this one is targeted at carriers outside of North America at the moment.

The third is the BlackBerry Magnum, which is expected to offer GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS with GPS, camera, Wi-Fi, QWERTY keyboard, and 480x360 resolution. Our moles tell us that AT&T has already committed to this one, as well.

Our moles suggest that the Onyx, Driftwood, and Magnum are different versions of the same BlackBerry that is customized for different carrier needs. Our moles are insisting that all three of these devices will be in the 9xxx series and will all offer 3G.

We suspect that the Magnum will likely be the rumored BlackBerry that has been in development for some time that will offer touch screen support along with a full QWERTY keyboard.
