Motorola revamps Atrix superphone

by on12 October 2011

New processor, camera, faster data

Motorola is showing off a revamp of its Atrix superphone, which was a pretty bold concept that really failed to attract much traction.

Dubbed Atrix 2, the redesigned phone now features a 1GHz dual-core Texas Instruments processor instead of the Tegra 2 chip used in the first generation. The camera was also upgraded to 8 megapixels, with 1080p video. Data speeds were also upgraded to HSPA+, but the rest of the package remains pretty much the same. Mind you, the fist gen Atrix shipped with a 960x540 screen and it was hardly underpowered with a similar 1GHz  processor, so Motorola didn’t have much room for improvement anyway.

Motorola developed two unique add-ons for the Atrix, an 11.6-inch laptop dock and a media dock, both of which turned the phone into a proper Linux computer. These extras are still available, but we see few takers. Mobile phones are supposed to be just that, mobile, so there’s not much point in sticking one into a dock.

The biggest difference is the price, as the Atrix 2 will be $100 cheaper than the original, or $99 with a two-year contract. The original Atrix will probably see significant price cuts, making it a pretty clever alternative to similarly spec’d dual-core phones.
