Behind closed doors

According to a report from ETnews, Samsung brought a 5.68-inch foldable AMOLED display prototype to Consumer Electronics Show 2014 and showed it to a carefully selected group of VIPs behind closed doors.

Although the report claims the panel is based on AMOLED technology, the display is a bit different than the flexible display on the Galaxy Round as, thanks to a new method in production, it can be bent in two places. Samsung's Galaxy Round used a different manufacturing process which allowed the screen to bent only to a certain level due to limitations with connectors.

The new display is is apparently made with a film-like polyimide (PI) substrate which makes it both quite thin and foldable like paper. While Galaxy Round display uses an indium tin oxide (ITO) film it is possible that Samsung opted for metal mesh material and thanks to a single-layer TSP, there should not be any touch problems with rupture forming between sensor layers when screen is bent.

Of course, this is still a prototype and Samsung does not expect mass production before 2015. Mobile World Congress 2014 (MWC 2014) is just around the corner and will open its doors on February 24th in Barcelona, Spain, so it is possible we will hear more about this new screen there.
