Xiaomi quadruples smartphone shipments

High hopes for 2015

Chinese handset giant Xiaomi says it has managed to ‘almost’ quadruple smartphone shipments in the first half of 2014.

The company has already surpassed its 2013 shipments, with six more months to go and it is still going strong.

Xiaomi managed to ship 26 million smartphones in the first six months of 2014. It shipped 18.7 million for the whole of 2013.

At this rate the company should pass the 50 million unit mark by the end of the year, with relative ease. However, it wants even more. Xiaomi plans to ship 100 million smartphones next year and expand to new markets, including Brazil, India and Russia.

The company is currently the sixth largest smartphone vendor in the world. If it manages to hit the 100 million mark next year, it might become the third biggest player, trailing only Samsung and Apple.
