Thanks to new phones

Android 4.4 is now running on more than a fifth of Android devices, according to Google’s latest figures.

Latest usage data statistics Kitkat has seen good growth since its July figures were released. Kitkat is on 20.9 percent of Android devices, which means that it can be found on over a fifth of active Android smartphones and tablets, up from the 17.9 percent in July. Most of the growth can be put down to the roll out of several Android smartphones, such as the LG G3 and HTC One M8, and the rollout of the latest version of Kitkat to older phones.

The OS is not close to closing the gap between it and Android 4.x Jelly Bean, which held on to a 55.3 percent slice of the market during the first week of August, down slightly from July's 56.5 percent. Android 4.1.x Jelly Bean is still the most popular with a 26.5 percent share, with Android 4.2.x Jelly Bean coming in at 19.8 percent, and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean at 7.9 percent.

Android 4.0.x Ice Cream Sandwich is clinging on to a 10.6 percent share of devices, while Android 2.3.x Gingerbread tops it with a 13.6 percent share. It seems that Android 2.2 Froyo is also still around on 0.7 percent of devices too and has a loyal following from its owners.
