Mobile shake up

Lenovo has decided to bolster its Motorolla brand and place its own smartphone doings under its control.

All of Lenovo’s smartphone operations will be run by Motorola umbrella and Lenovo Mobile will be eventually shut down.

Rick Osterloh who was formerly president, Motorola has taken over as the leader of the combined global smartphone business unit. Lenovo Mobile employees will join Motorola, Motorola will take over all designs.

This puts the ZUK in a strange place. Last week it was touted to be Lenovo's "flagship online brand" and it is not part of the merger so far. It is probably because it's independent of Lenovo group.

ZUK is competing on its own merits in the online space against rivals like Xiaomi and Huawei, both in China and internationally. It recently released its first smartphone, the $280 Cyanogen-OS-equipped Z1.

The Lenovo Mobile brand sells a lot in China and would have probably have sold more had they marketed into the EU. Once the merger is complete, Lenovo will offer fewer phones in total.

Hopefully it could mean that some of the models seen in China will start to make an appearance here.
