6.3-inch Infinity Display and dual camera

As expected, Samsung has officially unveiled its new Galaxy Note 8 flagship at its dedicated Unpacked Event, featuring a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED QHD+ screen, dual camera on the rear and either a Snapdragon 835 or Exynos 8895 SoC, depending on the region.

Measuring at 162.5 x 74.8 x 8.6 mm and weighing 195g, the new Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is a proper phablet but does not look that big due to its slim bezels that surround the 6.3-inch Super AMOLED 2960x1440 resolution screen, which translates to a decent 83.2 percent of screen-to-body ratio. The screen is HDR10 compliant and has an Always-On feature.

The heart of the Galaxy Note 8 will be either Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 SoC or Samsung's own Exynos 8895 SoC, depending on the region. This means that you will either get Mali-G71 MP20 GPU for Exynos or Adreno 540 for Snapdragon 835 SoC but both will get 6GB of RAM paired up with 64GB, 128GB or 256GB of internal storage.

As expected, the Galaxy Note 8 will come with Samsung's S Pen, which now has a new tip, with improved pressure sensitivity as well as an ability to take screen-off memos. There is also a neat feature where you can use the S Pen to translate a text from any of the available 71 languages. Another novelty is the multi-window multi-tasking, which allows users to run two apps simultaneously and even two instances of the same app.

The big update is the dual-camera setup at the rear of the Galaxy Note 8 which includes two 12-megapixel sensors, one placed behind an f/1.7 lens and other behind an f/2.4 telephoto lens, which offers 2x optical and 10x digital zoom. Samsung also gave optical stabilization for both lenses which is yet another first. The front camera is an 8-megapixel shooter with an f/1.7 lens, autofocus and should be good for most selfies.

When it comes to connectivity, Samsung has opted for a standard USB-C jack but retained the 3.5mm audio jack, which was greeted by many at the Unpacked Event. It also comes with all the usual connectivity options like the 802.11ac dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS and LTE Cat.16.

The rest of the features include most of the known sensors, including Iris Scanner, Pressure, Proximity, Heart Rate, Gyro, Fingerprint, Hall, Barometer and other sensors, as well as an IP86 rating which makes both the phone and the S Pen waterproof. It runs on Android 7.1 OS with Samsung own features on top of it, including digital assistant Bixby as well as support for Gear VR and DeX workstations.

The big part of the Unpacked event was about the battery and Galaxy Note 8 comes with a 3,300mAh unit. More importantly, each battery has passed an 8-Point Battery Safety Check so this won't have the same fate as the Galaxy Note 7.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 should be already available for pre-order all around the world with availability scheduled for September 24th. It will be available in Deepsea Blue, Midnight Black, Orchid Gray and Maple Gold color options and cost US $930 in the US and €999 in Europe, without a carrier contract. Those that pre-order will get either the Gear 360 camera, 128GB microSD card, fast wireless charger or Samsung DeX docking station, depending on the region.
