A pair of feature-rich boards

It looks as if 2008 will be a year of unexpected returns, as not only has Biostar made a comeback, but now it also looks as if Jetway is trying to arise from the dead. To be fair, the company was never gone, but it hasn't been concentrating on the high-end market for many years now, but by the looks of its latest motherboards, this might change.

The company has released one AMD and Intel-based motherboard, and although the Intel model is a bit last minute, as it's using the P35 chipset, it might just be a warm-up as to what we can expect. The HI03-Extreme, as the P35 board is called, has a pretty extensive feature set, with the rear I/O consisting of two PS/2 ports, six USB 2.0 ports, eSATA, 7.1-channel audio with coaxial S/PDIF in and out, a Gigabit Ethernet connector and what appears to be a CMOS reset button.

The board also features support for both DDR2 and DDR3 memory, although it only has a pair of DDR3 memory slots. Furthermore, it has two x16 PCIe slots, although as with all P35 boards the second slot only has x4 bandwidth. There's also a single x1 slot and three PCI slots for expansion. The board alos has seven SATA ports, headers for six more USB 2.0 ports and a fancy looking heatpipe cooling system on the chipset.

The AMD 790FX based HA04-Extreme features the exact same rear I/O layout, but only has headers for four extra USB 2.0 ports, as it's still using the old SB600 Southbridge. The board still has seven SATA connectors, but it has three x16 PCIe slots, although the bandwidth is limited to 16, 8, 8 if you use all three slots. It also has a single x1 PCIe slot and two PCI slots and again, a very intricate heatpipe cooling design, although it almost looks as if one of the heatpipes is getting a bit too close for comfort to the top x16 PCIe slot.

Both boards also feature a two-digit debug LED display and both are supplied with an additional SATA to eSATA bracket, as well as a suitable Molex to SATA power cable and eSATA to SATA data cable for use with internal drives outside of the case, in the same way as Gigabyte does.
