Complete revamp

ChileHardware has posted yet another slide from the AMD roadmap they've gotten their hands on and this time we're talking about SB800-series details. It appears as if there will be more than one version of the SB800, although no specifics about the various models were posted.

The SB800 is a completely new Southbridge and it features a faster chipset interconnect called A-Link Express 3.0 which uses four 5GHz PCIe lanes instead of four 2.5GHz PCIe lanes that the current SB700/750 A-link Express 2.0 relies on.

This will also be AMD's first Southbridge to feature a PCIe interface, as previous models have relied on the Northbridge for all PCIe connectivity. The SB800 will have support for four 5GHz PCIe 2.0 x1 lanes.

AMD will also be integrating a Gigabit Ethernet MAC, adding optional support for up to 6GB/s SATA and AHCI 1.2 with FIS based switching. There will also be a boost from 12 to 14 USB 2.0 ports as AMD is adding a third EHCI USB controller.

Improved power management will also be added for the Fusion platform with support for deeper power states. There will also be support for an integrated clock, embedded I/O controllers, of one will be dedicated for DASH support for system management and finally, there will be an improved hardware monitor.

All in all, it looks very promising and it seems like AMD is finally catching up with and possibly even overtaking Intel when it comes to its chipsets, so maybe that purchase of ATI wasn't all a bad idea. Now they just need to sort out the processors and AMD will have a very interesting platform to offer.
