SLI support possible on X58

The return of the nForce 200

If the information posted on HKEPC is indeed correct, then it looks like Nvidia won't be doing its own chipset for the Bloomfield processor family, and even possibly no chipsets at all for the entire Nehalem range of CPUs from Intel.

However, it appears that there will still be SLI support on the platforms, that is, if the motherboard manufacturers are willing to integrate the nForce 200 chip onto their motherboard. Judging by how well Intel's Skulltrail engineers liked the nForce 200 chipset and its thermal properties, this might not be a popular solution among many of the motherboard manufacturers.

It seems like a strange move by Nvidia, but it might just be that Intel has told them that there's no chance that they'll ever get a QPI license, or maybe Nvidia is considering exiting the chipset business altogether.

Other issues with the nForce 200 are that it adds cost, each chip is about US$30 and it's unlikely that the motherboard manufacturers can use the same PCB layout on its non-SLI and SLI-enabled X58 motherboards. This sounds like yet another win for AMD to us, even though it's only a small one.
