The upgraders dream?

It has taken a while, but AMD has finally launched the 790GX chipset. It's an interesting chipset in as much as you get decent 3D performance off the bat, as the IGP is a step up over the 780G chipset and we're expecting most 790GX motherboards to ship with 128MB of GDDR3 SidePort memory which should further enhance the 3D performance and use less shared system memory.

It also supports Hybrid CrossFire which allows you to add an entry level AMD graphics card for a small performance boost, but it also supports CrossFireX which allows you to use two more powerful AMD graphics cards for some dual x8 PCIe 2.0 action.

The 790GX chipset is paired with the SB750 which offers Advanced Clock Calibration or AAC as AMD likes to call it, which allows for better overclocking of Phenom processors. Other features include support for HDMI connectivity, AVIVO HD for smooth 1080p video playback and surround view with the addition of a graphics card.

So far we've seen announcements from Gigabyte and Biostar, but only Biostar seems to have the products on their website. Although they have a total of three models based on the 790GX chipset, one ATX motherboard with 128MB of GDDR3 SidePort memory, one ATX motherboard with 64MB of DDR2 SidePort memory and a mATX motherboard with 64MB of DDR2 SidePort memory. Have a look at Biostar's website here for more details. The Gigabyte board will feature 128MB of GDDR3 SidePort memory and it's also an ATX size motherboard.
