Getting reasonable again

Intel was selling its X48 chipset to motherboard manufacturers for $70 and when it comes to Intel, this was the most expensive chipset ever. This is the wholesale price before the manufacture gets to negotiate the price with Intel and this is the price of Northbridge and corresponding Southbridge.

The X58, Intel's first Nehalem chipset will be selling for at least $52 per chipset, but we don’t think this necessarily means that the Bloomfield boards are going to get cheaper than X48 ones. Notebook manufacturers are pushing the prices of the boards at least on the high-end side, simply as its very hard to make any money on the entry-level products.

X38 currently sells for $50 and adding two more dollars will get you the latest, greatest and currently the only Nehalem chipset out there. The very popular P45 is currently selling for $40.
