Memory controller on board

In Q1 2009 there should be quite a few AM3 motherboard for "We hope it won't be delayed again“ Deneb AM3, DDR3 supporting CPU.

We've learned that 790FX boards will get a priority in AM3 DDR3 transition path. The memory controller is in the CPU, so theoretically, you should be able to put the old chipsets in use with Deneb and other 45nm AM3 versions, but on such a board, manufacturers would have to change the wiring for the memory on the PCB, to make it possible. The point is that other chipsets should also work with Deneb AM3 CPUs.

AM3 boards with 790FX chipset are expected in Q1 2009, and this is the exact timeframe for first AM3 45nm CPUs. As you can see AM3 and 45nm DDR3 support is for the high end, and it will expand to a cheaper market afterwards. The unpleasant fact in this strategy is that 790FX boards cost a lot of money.

There won't be any cheaper AM3 boards at least not before late Q2 2009, as this is the time you can expect a new chipset called RS880 to kicks in. Knowing AMD this chipset will most likely launch at Computex, just like most of their chipsets.
