Cebit 08: Many 790i DDR3 boards at CeBIT

We’ve seen
many partners who've showcased their motherboards based on the upcoming 790i chipset from Nvidia with DDR3 support. Gigabyte showed their own version supporting DDR3 and 3-Way SLI. It’s a 680i replacement, and this new board is high-end. It supports 45nm CPUs, 1,333MHz FSB and DDR3-1333 memory. The Ultra model will also bring better overclocking potential with FSB 1,600 support.

The board has high-quality power components that will easily handle overclocking, minimize your electricity bill and prolong your motherboard’s life. The Dynamic Power Saver technology that Gigabyte uses on its Intel chipset boards is not incorporated here due to incompatibility issues with Nvidia’s chipset for the time being.

The GA-790SLI-DQ6 packs three PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots for 3-Way SLI, while the fourth PCIe is only x4. The design looks solid, and the only thing that we thought might be an issue is that the first PCIe slot is too close to the memory slots. The Molex connector, next to the first PCIe slot, could have been positioned better, and the same thing goes for the 8-pin power connector. Silent Pipe and Crazy Cool passive cooling uses pure copper so the hot Northbridge chipset will hopefully be kept cool enough.
