Stays silent on pricing, availability
Intel has officially announced several new Atom processors today, but it failed to
disclose the most important details about them: pricing and
availability. Fortunately, we did that for them on several occasions so
we won't even bother doing it again, at least not in detail.
Intel's new Atom CPUs feature integrated graphics and a much more power
efficient and compact two-chip NM10 Express chipset. Dual core parts
are still reserved for nettops, while notebook makers will have to make
do with single-core units. The new CPUs will not offer a significant
performance boost compared to current generation Atoms.
Intel has announced more than 80 design wins for new Atoms. The list
includes the usual suspects, such as Asus, Acer, Dell, MSI, Toshiba and
Samsung. Interestingly, Intel claims it has shipped in excess of 40
millio Atom processors for netbooks since the chip's introduction in
mid 2008. This is just the beginning, as analysts expect Atom shipments
to go into the hundreds of millions come 2011.
