Looking good

Grabbing some attention from its parent company Acer, Gateway has rolled out a new ID series of ultra-thin notebooks based on Intel's Calpella platform. The ID Series has the looks and the price to become quite popular, so we expect more models and not just the 14-inch ID49 and the 15.6-inch ID59.

Both of the newely announced ID Series ultra-thin's have an Ultrabright LED-backlit screen with 1366x768 resolution, a decent and sleek looking 1-inch thick aluminium body as well as a rather neat looking glowing touchpad, something that sounds like a good idea. (Or not. sub.ed.)

The 14-inch ID49 measures 22.2-25.4x342x 245mm (HxWxD)  and weighs 2.3kg while the bigger 15.6-inch ID59's dimensions are 21.9-26.3x 440x325mm (HxWxD) dimensions and it weighs around 2.5kg. Both models feature a 6-cell 4400mAh battery which is enough for around 6 hours of use according to Gateway.

As far as the important specs are concerned, you are looking at ultra-thin notebooks that can be equipped with either a Core i3 or Core i5 CPU, up to 8GB of memory, either an Intel integrated graphics or a Geforce GT 330M for some Optimus fun, up to 500GB of HDD space and bunch of other features including a 1.3M webcam, 802.11bng WiFi, DVD write, multi-card reader and Gigabit LAN.

According to Gateway, these should hit the USA with a start price of US $679.99 for of the ID49 and the start price of US $799.99 for the ID59. You can find them both here.
