48 billion app installs

Google has just announced that its Android OS has reached a total of 900 million activations.

Google has been on quite a roll and with 100 million activations in 2011 and over 400 million in 2012, it has now managed to reach an incredible 900 million activations around the world. In addition to the 900 million Android activations, Google also says that there have been a total of 48 billion app installation to date, which means it is just 2 billion short of Apple. It got 2.8 billion installations last month while revenue per user rose 2.5 times when compared to the previous year.

As Google's Vic Gundotra noted, there are over 7 billion people on the planet Earth, and Google wants a large piece of that number. Gundotra also noted that while Android did quite well with its 400 million activations there are places in this world where Android penetration is only at 10 percent and there is certainly a lot of room for improvement.

Google I/O 2013 has just kicked off and we'll keep an eye on it for some new and interesting annoucements.
