$5.5 billion merger proposed between MetroPCS and Leap Wireless

More consolidation for the U.S. wireless industry


 

Wireless carrier MetroPCS has proposed a merger with Leap Wireless (a former spin-off from Qualcomm) in a deal reported to be worth about $5.5 billion. 

It could be a good marriage for the two carriers: both focus on selling prepaid service plans to customers with little or no credit, and also on customers without perfect credit that other wireless carriers aren’t eager to serve. MetroPCS operates primarily in larger cities, while Leap concentrates its business in rural and suburban markets.

A combination of the two carriers would reportedly equal nearly 6.2 million customers and make it the fifth largest cell provider in the U.S.
