Microsoft has apologized for pushing updates on users without
their blessing.
Over the last few weeks, Windows Update has updated
nine small executable files even when the feature was switched
off.
The updates were to the Windows Update engine. Microsoft said that
if Windows Update doesn't update itself, it stops functioning
properly.
Nate Clinton, Windows Update program manger, said the result
would fail to meet customer expectations but even worse, would lead users to
believe that they were secure even though there was no installation
and/or notification of upgrades.
However he admitted that Microsoft
should have warned users first and explained itself better.
