New Office for Mac just around the corner

Microsoft’s Macintosh Business Unit announced additional details of the forthcoming Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac today at the Apple Expo in Paris.

Office 2008 for Mac will include the following core applications: Word 2008, Excel 2008, PowerPoint 2008 and Entourage 2008. In addition to the core Office applications for Mac, the Mac BU also announced Microsoft Expression, which is a new digital asset management system which will be part of what is being called “Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition.” In addition to the new Microsoft Expression application, the Special Media Edition will feature Microsoft Exchange server support for users that are in mixed PC and Mac environments that feature a Microsoft Exchange.

Also, Microsoft will be offering an Office 2008 for Mac Home and Student edition that will be specially priced for users with basic productivity needs. All versions of Office 2008 for Mac will feature the new Open XML format support. The new Office 2008 applications are Universal applications that will work on either Power PC or Intel based Mac.

Office 2008 for Mac will be available in three editions: Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac which will be priced at US$399 for the full retail version and US$299 for the upgrade version; Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Home and Student Edition which will be priced at US$149, and no upgrade will be offered for this version; Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition which will retail for US$499 for the full edition or US$299 for the upgrade version.

In addition, Microsoft announced that it will offer its technology guarantee program to qualifying customers who purchase Office 2004 for Mac prior to the release of Office 2008 for Mac. This will allow buyers of Office 2004 for Mac to upgrade free to Office 2008 for Mac, with the user only having to pay the cost of shipping, handling and applicable tax when Office 2008 for Mac is released. Additional information on the Mac Office technology guarantee program will be available on the Office for Mac Web site soon.

Office 2008 for Mac is expected to be released on January 15th in North America, with general world-wide availability expected during the first quarter of 2008.
