€149 for 256MB GDDR3

Two weeks ago we wrote about HD2900GT prices in the EU and we kept our eyes open for any changes, so here's an update. Back then, several retailers were listing Club3D's 2900GT for €184 to €190. When compared to HD2900PRO cards, which were available for as little as €203, the GT didn't exactly look like a bargain. You can read our original article here.

However, since then things have changed for the better and we're pleased to inform you that in the past couple of days Sapphire and GeCube have joined the GT club. That's not big news in itself, but the new, lower prices are definitely worth reporting. Sapphire's 2900GT in a full retail package is listed at €149, GeCube's GT is slightly more expensive at €154 and Club3D is still no bargain at €171.

What's more, HD2900PRO prices have risen by 5-10 percent since our last article. Back then you could get the cheapest HD2900PRO for €203, and many more were available in the 200-220 euro price range. Right now, the best offer is €209, but most cards with 512MB of memory retail for more than €220. Several HD2900PRO cards with 1024MB of GDDR4 memory are available, too, but their prices range from 270 to 300+ euro. We won't speculate on what's behind this slight price surge, but it's pretty obvious that there's a demand for these affordable and overclockable cards.

Of course, keep in mind that the 2900PRO has 320 stream processors, 512MB of memory and a 512 bit memory bus, while the GT has 240 stream processors, 256MB of GDDR3 memory and a 256 bit memory bus. In spite of that, the GT is starting to look tempting, thanks to the new prices.

It's approximately 40 percent less than the HD2900PRO, and what's even more interesting, the GT costs around 10 percent more than an average Geforce 8600GTS with the same amount of memory. ATI's HD2600XT GDDR4 cards are about 30 percent less than the HD2900GT.

The 2900GT is still not available and the retailers aren't disclosing any exact dates, but we're expecting it in the next few weeks.
