Availability issues might push it back to January

Many were expecting to see Asustek's Eee PC in European retail in early December. However, if you were hoping to get one before the holidays, there's a good chance that you'll be left out in the cold.

Most European retailers and e-tailers are expecting the Eee PC to be available in about 4 weeks, basically on Christmas day. Others claim that they'll be able to ship it sometime in January.

In last couple of weeks we saw numerous reports claiming that Asus was facing availability issues and that it was finding it hard to meet demand. Recently, the company contracted Chunghwa Picture Tubes to produce 7-inch screens for the affordable Eee PC. To date, AU Optronics was the principal supplier of screens for the Eee. The Eee PC is selling well in other markets, foremost in the U.S., as we've said here.

We're not sure how serious these shortages are, but if the retailer estimates are accurate it seems that Asus is bound to miss the holiday gravy train, at least in Europe, much to the dismay of potential buyers.
