Intel increases lead

According to an iSupply report, Intel is building its strength, increasing its market share and increasing its lead on the semiconductor market.

With a 12.5 percent market share, Intel is still world's largest chipmaker, followed by Samsung Electronics with 7.4 percent and Toshiba in third place. Texas Instruments is now in fourth place. iSupply expects total semiconductor revenues of around $271 billion, up 4.1 percent from last year.

Sony has jumped to eighth place, thanks to a 57 percent increase in revenue, which can be attributed to sales of its PlayStation 3 chips. Sony used to be number 14 and getting into the top 10 is a great achievement for this Japanese company.

Infineon also entered the top ten, jumping from 15th to 10th place, thanks to its wireless business and booming sales in the mobile phone industry, where this German company is a dominant player.
